The Heritage of Hairpins

The Heritage of Hairpins

There should probably be a disclaimer on this blog being that is it’s our very first one (woohoo, go us). This blog is one of many firsts we’ve experienced over the past few months since acquiring the manufacturing of the Dorothy Biddle Service flower holders, and we hope there are many more to come.

So, without further ado...

We’ll never forget when we first found out about the hairpin holder. Since we were already *in love* with pin holders in general, we were relentless at getting our grubby little hands on this style.

For those of you who’ve never heard of the hairpin holders, here’s a few highlights:

  • You can literally design from *ANY* angle in these pin holders, the top, the side, diagonal; go crazy.
  • The pins are super flexible so you can manipulate the holders and get the perfect support you need
  • For new designers, the hairpin holder’s looped pin design is a gentler version of traditional flower frogs.

A Brief History

An heirloom design tool, the Blue Ribbon Flower holders were originally designed in 1933 by floral designer Ida Sinclair of Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Later, in the 1950’s, the Blue Ribbon Flower Holder Company was purchased by Dorothy Biddle, a master florist and owner of the mail-order garden supply store, Dorothy Biddle Service. In December of 2016, we purchased the manufacturing of the Blue Ribbon Holders from Dorothy’s granddaughter, Lynne, and Floral Genius was born.

Why we love them

Ok, so we’ve already said this, but seriously, you can design from all angles with these holders. They also have a really heavy base to support even our bigger ideas. Everything about the hairpin enables you to be a little more daring with your designs, offering the perfect temple for your creative spirit.
